Dalton gets backing from NC police officers’ group

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Democratic Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton has the support of a key professional police organization in his bid for North Carolina governor.

Dalton announced Wednesday the North Carolina Fraternal Order of Police endorsed him in the November election. A Dalton campaign release quotes group President Randy Hagler as saying Dalton has a clear record of support for law enforcement officers.

The Fraternal Order of Police has 6,300 members statewide, comprised of current and retired officers.

Dalton already has received the endorsement of the statewide Police Benevolent Association. Republican rival Pat McCrory has the backing of the North Carolina Troopers Association.

Both Dalton and McCrory have highlighted support from local sheriffs, but Dalton says more have endorsed him than McCrory.
