Deadline looms for charter schools to submit contract info

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Tomorrow is the deadline for charter schools to comply with a public record directive from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

Last month DPI told charters they must submit information on the private companies they contract with to run the schools and the people the companies employ in the schools, including duties and salary information for those employees. It’s part of the McCrory administration’s push to ensure transparency and accountability among charter schools and make sure the school adhere to the state’s open record laws.

We’ve requested that information from leland-based Charter Day School, Inc., which uses the services of Roger Bacon Academy to run four area charter schools, including Charter Day School in Leland, Columbus Charter in Whiteville, Douglass Academy in Wilmington and South Brunswick Charter near Southport. So far, CDS has not released the information to us. The NC Office of Charter Schools says CDS has also not submitted the information yet to the state.
