Man charged with murder in Monkey Junction shooting

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office says a man has been charged with second degree murder in an early morning shooting.

It happened just before 1:00 a.m. on Julia Drive in the Sycamore Grove neighborhood.

“My buddy just called me,” a 911 caller said. “He lives on Julia Drive in Monkey Junction. I don’t know if he was fighting with somebody or what, but on the phone I heard a gun shot and he said he’d been shot and he was bleeding.”

Deputies responded and found Terry Dale Greenwood, 39, dead. They also found Anthony Paul Lanza, 35, injured.

While investigating, deputies found Aaron Stephens, 42, of Julia Drive, who was also involved in the altercation.

Detectives worked throughout the day interviewing witnesses.

Late this afternoon, they arrested Stephens for second degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury with intent to kill and possession of a firearm by a felon.

He is in the New Hanover County Jail under no bond.

People who live nearby are shocked this happened in such a quiet neighborhood.

“It’s very disheartening and alarming for our neighborhood,” resident Karen Harris said. “It’s a very safe neighborhood. We have been here for five years now. And we’re like the 7th house in. Never have we had this happen in our neighborhood before.”

“I think as a neighborhood we need to come together and really watch out for each other,” resident April Batchelor said. “Because we have kids and this is where we live. And I moved here because it was a safe area.”
