WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a deputy fired at a vehicle during an encounter Thursday morning near Bozeman Lane.

Deputies responded after a suspicious vehicle was reported to 911 in the area.

The sheriff’s office says deputies located the vehicle, and a confrontation followed as they approached. Investigators say the driver, Josiah Mitchell, tried to flee and nearly struck a deputy.

During the incident, a deputy fired at the vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office.

Mitchell then fled northbound on Carolina Beach Road.

A short time later, deputies learned that Mitchell had arrived at New Hanover Regional Medical Center with what appeared to be superficial gunshot wounds.

Amanda Schedler was on her way to work and says Mitchell’s vehicle nearly hit her car

“When it first happened, I’m like something is bad happening or he’s fleeing something or going to the hospital because no one is driving that fast that early,” Schedler said. “And when I found out, you know, that there was an altercation with police, I realized wow, that could have been really bad, like if I was turning or actively driving or just an inch or two over, they could have just hit my car, caused more damage with other people around me.”

Mitchell was taken into custody at the hospital and is now charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, speeding to elude arrest with aggravating factors, resisting, obstructng or delaying a public officer and driving without a license.
