Derby girls explain passion for skating

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Cape Fear Roller Girls know when they need to act tough, but they’ll also do whatever it takes to raise money for area charities.

Most recently, with their season-opening bout, they women raised more than $1,000 for the Rape Crisis Center. In fact, they raise money for a charity at each game…or bouts as they call them.

They invited Ashley Jacobs to lace up some skates to learn a few drills and share more about their non-profit mission.

Michelle Ingrahm is a fulltime working woman in heels by day, but in skates…she’s Fiona Fatale. “Tt’s a little bit noir, a little bit dangerous, a little bit fun, kind of a play on Femme Fatale.”

And then there is Taranado D. Bree. “It’s kind of like tornado debris, I’m kinda’ like a twister coming down the track,” she said.

Many of the girls say roller derby is the perfect escape from their everyday lifestyles, as well as a great workout. The girls will hold tryouts in May, but in the meantime you can check out a bout by visiting:
