Disabled veteran wants to challenge Hamilton for NC House seat

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Leland man says he will run for the NC House seat currently held by Rep. Susi Hamilton.

Gerald “Jerry” Benton, a Republican, is a disabled veteran who says he is running for office to address growing problems in the state such as a failing education system, unattractive retirement taxation and lack of conservative values.

Benton says he was injured while on active duty for the National Guard a couple years ago in Mississippi during Operation enduring freedom.

Hamilton, a Democrat, who also reportedly plans to run next year, is in the middle of her third term serving District 18 in the House. The district stretches from downtown Wilmington west across norther Brunswick County to the Columbus County line and then south past Bolivia.

Candidate filing starts tomorrow and runs until Dec. 21.
