Disaster safety expo helps residents prepare for emergencies

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)– Hurricane season is upon us, and what a better way to make sure everyone is prepared than with a safety expo.

The New Hanover Disaster Coalition hosted a Disaster Safety Expo Saturday at the Skyline Center, giving residents tools and resources to help them prepare for emergencies and natural disasters.

Attendees had the chance to connect with local organizations, learn about emergency preparedness plans, and gather safety information — all while enjoying live music and community activities.

Maria Rodriguez, who is part of the New Hanover County Hispanic-Latino Commission, says the event was especially helpful because much of the information was also available in Spanish for members of the Latino community.

“Our goal is to acquire this information and disseminate it to the community so they are aware where to get help,” Rodriguez said. “We have learned about so many wonderful programs where everything is free.”
