Diverging diamond in Leland could close this weekend

LELAND, NC (WWAY) – Heads up, drivers!

There’s a chance the diverging diamond interchange in Leland will close this weekend.

The weather will determine whether that actually happens. North Carolina Department of Transportation spokesman Brian Rick says this project is weather sensitive, so any rain could prevent crews from moving forward with the closure. Rick said the work includes final paving and lane striping for the diverging diamond interchange.

The diverging diamond interchange takes traffic on Village Road and River Road at US 17/74/76 to the other side of the road to help move speed access to the causeway. The new layout opened earlier this year.

Signs have already been posted in the area warning of the closure, but the DOT hopes to have a final answer on Thursday.

We will keep you updated.
