Documentary teaches Williston students legacy of alum Althea Gibson

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Students at Williston Middle School were in for quite a treat this afternoon. The documentary “Althea” premiered at their school today.

The documentary tells the story of the tennis great, Althea Gibson, overcoming adversity to become one of the greatest players in history. Lenny Simpson, who was mentored by Gibson, presented the film to the students and talked with them about her great achievements in the 1950’s.

Simpson says they plan to take the film to all of the schools in New Hanover County with the hope if inspiring young minds to achieve great things. Which is exactly what the film did at Williston. Students say hearing her story makes them feel like they can do anything!
