Douglass Academy celebrates birthday of namesake

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Not only is it Valentine’s Day it’s also Frederick Douglass’s 200th birthday.

Students at Douglass Academy in Wilmington celebrated with activities focused on remembering his remarkable achievements Wednesday.

Students honored the namesake of their charter school as part of their studies during black history month.

All grades read books about Frederick Douglass and had in-depth discussions.

Students also filled out banners about why Frederick Douglass would be proud of them.

School officials say they hope the students remember that Frederick Douglass was a champion of education and thought that education would lead to freedom.

“Frederick Douglass thinks that we can be anything and he believes in us,” 5th grader Arquan Fleming said.

Douglass Academy is in its fifth year as a school of choice having a program of classical education for kindergarten through 5th grade.
