Dozens attend NC Court of Appeals special session

BRUNSWICK, NC (WWAY) — Dozens of people, including students and lawyers, got the chance to see firsthand how the North Carolina Court of Appeals works this afternoon in Brunswick County. All in honor of the court’s 50th anniversary.

The event was led by a three-judge panel. The judges heard two cases at the Brunswick County Courthouse as part of a special session.

The purpose of the session was to educate the community and raise awareness of the role the court system plays in the lives of people across the state. The Court of Appeals gives cases an opportunity to be appealed in order to reach a higher state or federal court.

One of the judges, Wanda Bryant, grew up in Brunswick County and could not be more excited to be back.

“It was great for our law clerks to come,” Bryant said. “And to see a different, you know, trial of court like this. A different community of people embracing other people. I think it’s good for them, I’m glad they were able to be here. And I’m certainly glad that my colleagues have enjoyed their time here and I know I have, because this is home, I always love coming home.”

Bryant has been on the court for 16 years and counting. She along with other members will continue celebrating the court’s 50th anniversary throughout the year.
