Dragging suspect says he didn’t know deputy was on car

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The man accused of dragging a deputy behind a car made his first court appearance this afternoon.

Kyeric Tashaun Sweet tried to explain his actions to the judge.

Sweet said he did not know a deputy was on the car when he took off from a Gordon Road gas station Tuesday night.

This morning the New Hanover County Jail shared with media a mug shot of Sweet that showed his right eye swollen shut. Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Jerry Brewer said it was an old mug shot, because when Sweet was booked into jail overnight he was uncooperative with jailers.

Sweet’s family said this afternoon at court that his injuries in the photo were the result of police brutality a couple weeks ago. His mother explained to the judge that he missed court on his initial charge, because he was in treatment. His sister says her brother is a troubled guy, but a good guy all the same.

Sweet is charged assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, among other charges. He’s in jail under a $735,000 bond. His next court date is May 7.

Brewer said two members of the Housing Unit Task Force stopped at the Kangaroo Express on Gordon Road around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday night. Brewer said when they were walking into the store, they noticed a Sweet, who was wanted for felony charges, in the passenger seat of a car.

When the deputies approached the car, the 21-year-old moved over to the driver’s seat. They said when one of the deputies opened the driver’s door, Sweet sped off in the car, dragging the deputy about 20 yards.

Deputies said Sweet then wrecked in a ditch near the Kangaroo before running off. They say the deputy was treated and released from Cape Fear Memorial Hospital’s ER. Sweet now faces a felony assault on a law enforcement officer charge.

Investigators said Sweet had warrants out for his arrest on felony drug charges and probation violations.
