Edgecombe commission chair caught in gambling raid
ROCKY MOUNT, NC (AP) — The chairman of the Edgecombe County Board of Commissioners was among the 10 people charged after a raid of illegal gambling operations last weekend.
The Rocky Mount Telegram reported that 73-year-old Leonard Wiggins was charged with a misdemeanor violation after the raids at two homes in Raleigh and one in Wendell. Agents with the state Division of Alcohol Law Enforcement conducted the raids.
Agents say Wiggins and three other people played a game of chance at which money was bet at the house in Wendell. One agent says the buy-in at the poker game ranged from $1,000 to $5,000 that night.
There was no answer Friday at a home number listed in Wiggins’ name.
