Escaped prison inmate caught in Whiteville

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — An escaped prison inmate is back in custody after being caught early this morning.

The NC Department of Public Safety says prison staff and the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office caught Ricky Robinson around 1 a.m. in Whiteville.

Robinson, a minimum custody inmate at Tabor Correctional Institution, left his work assignment Tuesday. DPS says he was working as a janitor at Columbus Correctional Institution in Whiteville, when he walked away from his assignment.

Robinson, 59, will face charges for his escape.

He is currently serving a a nine-year, nine-month sentence as a habitual felon. He was scheduled for release in June 2021.

Robinson’s criminal record includes convictions for breaking and entering, kidnapping, larceny of a motor vehicle, assault on a female and communicating threats, among a host of others.
