‘Everybody loved Alec’: Wilmington skate park renamed in memory of local skater

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) — The city of Wilmington has renamed a popular skate park in honor of Alec Chambers, a local skater who was killed in a crash last year.

The former Greenfield Grind Skate Park is now known as the Alec Chambers Skate Park. City leaders, family members, friends and members of the skateboarding community gathered for the unveiling of a memorial honoring Chambers.

“It’s overwhelming, we are very very thankful and grateful for it,” said Chandler Chambers, Alec Chambers’ brother.

Chambers died Dec. 30, 2025, after a crash near Satellite Bar and Lounge shortly after 12:30 a.m.

Wilmington police charged Michelle Masiello in connection with the crash. Police said the 34-year-old was driving a Jeep on Greenfield Street when she drove onto the edge of the bar’s parking lot, striking and killing Chambers.

Masiello faces charges of second-degree murder, felony death by vehicle, driving while impaired and reckless driving to endanger.

“It’s been a very difficult period of our lives,” said Joy North, Chambers’ mother.

North said her son frequently visited the skate park while growing up.

“The ultimate goal for Alec was reaching the goal of being a professional rider, he succeeded but he did not live to realize his dream completely,” North said.

Chambers also worked at video production company Film Werks. His co-worker, Maggie Grimes, helped design the memorial, which she said was inspired by Chambers’ silhouette on a skateboard.

“Everybody at Film Werks loved Alec,” Grimes said. “He was there a short time but in that time everybody enjoyed working with him, there was nothing bad to ever say about Alec.”

North said the newly renamed park will help ensure her son’s legacy lives on.

“Alec would have been 33 on August 27, I hope my resume is as good as Alec’s when I meet my Maker,” North said.

Masiello’s next court date is scheduled for Sept. 14 at the New Hanover County Courthouse.
