EXTRAORDINARY PEOPLE: The Family of the Year
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — We begin 2017 honoring a Family of the Year for 2016. They are from New Hanover County and they are knocking down all the pins when it comes to helping the community.
Katherine’s got game! “She bowls Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday,” her mother told Daniel Seamans.
Her mother, Anita, has got it too. “I get ready, I go to work, I work with special needs kids,” Anita Whisenant said of her daily life.
They start 2017 off with the highest praise from Special Olympics North Carolina.
“We had no idea whatsoever,” Anita added. The Whisenant family is the 2016 Special Olympics Family of the Year for North Carolina.
“It took us both by surprise,” Dan Whisenant said. “We had no idea. We thought we were going to get a nice thank you note for what we did on the Christmas float but it was much more than that so we are very humbled by that.”
Anita and Dan are known for doing quite a bit for Special Olympics New Hanover County.
Katherine is right there in the middle of it, too. Bowling. Cheering too. Anita was a coach and Katherine was a cheerleader in the 2015 Special Olympics World Games. Katherine is also helping the community just like her parents.
“She volunteers every day of the week except Tuesday,” Anita said of her daughter. “She volunteers at the hospital Monday and Friday. Tuesday is a rest day. Wednesday she volunteers at the day care at the YMCA, Thursday she volunteers at Ace Hardware.”
The award is for family of the YEAR.
But Anita, Dan, and Katherine….what you do every DAY is why we are proud to call you our Extraordinary Person(s) of the WEEK.
The 2017 Polar Plunge, 5k, and 1 mile fun run benefiting Special Olympics New Hanover County is February 11th. If you’d like more information on how to take part or volunteer, click here.
