FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WWAY) — The Fayetteville VA Medical Center has received additional federal funding to support infrastructure improvements, renovations and upgrades aimed at improving health care services for veterans.

The funding was awarded during the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2026, following earlier allocations to the facility.

According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the funding is part of a record $4.8 billion nationwide investment through the Veterans Health Administration’s Non-recurring Maintenance program, which supports repairs, modernization and improvements at VA health care facilities.

Projects approved for the Fayetteville VA Medical Center include renovations to create a 25-bed medical and surgical nursing unit on the second floor, upgrades to specialty clinic spaces and improvements to patient support areas.

Additional projects include:

  • Electronic health record infrastructure upgrades at the Fayetteville NC VA Medical Center and Cumberland County VA Clinic
  • Renovations to first-floor hallways and walls
  • Humidity control improvements in the dental clinic
  • Renovations to medical center support spaces and nursing administration and education areas
  • Audiology space renovations to accommodate specialty clinics
  • Emergency stairwell and lobby improvements
  • Welcome center and patient support renovations
  • Replacement of third-floor fan coil units
  • Fire alarm system replacement
  • Replacement of vertical piping in Building 1

“This funding allows the Fayetteville NC VA Medical Center to continue modernizing and improving, so our facility remains safe, efficient, and equipped to provide high-quality care for our local Veterans,” said Marri Fryar, executive director of the Fayetteville NC VA Coastal Healthcare System.

The VA said it obligated the full $4.8 billion available for maintenance projects in fiscal year 2026.

Nationwide, fourth-quarter projects include approximately $1.18 billion for outdated infrastructure repairs, $938 million for major building upgrades and $560 million for improvements supporting future electronic health record system updates.

The department also reported expanding access to veterans’ health care nationwide, including opening 43 new VA health care facilities and enrolling more than 300,000 new veterans in VA health care in 2026.

According to the VA, the department completed more than 82 million direct care appointments and nearly 60 million community care appointments in fiscal year 2025.

The VA did not specify how much of the nationwide funding was allocated directly to the Fayetteville facility or provide completion timelines for the individual projects.
