FBI, local sheriffs discuss heroin task force in Cape Fear

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The FBI announced a new task force in the Cape Fear region that will work to combat the heroin problem in the area.

According to a release from the Charlotte Division of the FBI, the FBI Coastal Criminal Enterprise Task Force will include the following organizations: FBI’s Wilmington Resident Agency, the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations.

An FBI spokeswoman said statistics show overdose deaths from heroin abuse have more than doubled since 2010. She also said more people die from drug overdoses than car accidents.

“Combining forces with the FBI is a major step forward in fighting the heroin epidemic that is plaguing our communities,” Brunswick County Sheriff John Ingram said. “Ultimately it will enable us to go beyond our local and state borders and further investigate those who traffic heroin into our area.”

New Hanover County Sheriff Ed McMahon stated, “Now more than ever we need to use our partnerships with our local and federal agencies to ensure the safety of our communities,” New Hanover County Sheriff Ed McMahon added.

Stanley Meador, a FBI agent, said their goal to find the people supplying the dealers on the streets.

“We’re looking for subjects and associates engaged in the distribution of illegal substances and we are looking for their sources of supply,” said Meador.
