Ferry crew rescues kiteboarder in Cape Fear River

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A kiteboarder was rescued over the weekend after he got tangled on a navigational aid in the Cape Fear River near Fort Fisher, according to officials.

According to officials, the crew of the M/V Fort Fisher was completing its midday run on Saturday between Southport and Fort Fisher when Captain Barry West noticed the man and his gear tangled in the Federal Point Rear Range Beacon.

A few minutes later, Captain West saw the kiteboarder struggling to swim to shore against the current, and made the decision to launch the ferry’s lifeboat.

Crew members Peter Powell and John Moore navigated the lifeboat toward the swimmer, who was about 250 yards from shore when he was pulled onto the lifeboat and brought back to the Fort Fisher Ferry Terminal.

NCDOT says the man said he was exhausted and shaken but otherwise unhurt, and did not require any further medical attention.
