Fight against proposed Titan cement plant continues

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) – As Titan America continues to try and put a cement plant in Castle Hayne, those against it met in Wrightsville Beach Wednesday night.

NC Coastal Federation members are still fighting the proposal after six years saying the plant, which will burn more than 250,000 tons of coal a year, will discharge pollutants into the Northeast Cape Fear River.

Coastal Advocate Mike Giles said the meeting was a way to provide more information, and get people fired up about the issue again.

“You know, when you’re on the right side, and I think we’re on the right side, we feel like we wouldn’t be in this fight. Number one if it wasn’t worth it, and number two if it wasn’t right, and number three we didn’t feel like we were going to win,” Giles said.

Giles added that they’re still waiting on a decision for their challenge against Titan America’s air quality permit.

According to the Titan America website, the plant would bring about 160 full-time jobs to New Hanover County, and have an annual $120-million fiscal impact.
