FIRST ON 3: Body found in SC 11 years ago identified as Brunswick Co. woman

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The body of a Brunswick County woman found 11 years ago has finally been identified. Investigators in South Carolina say the remains they found more than a decade ago are Michelle Haggadon of Bolivia.

Haggadon’s family has been waiting for answers about where she was or what happened to her for a long time. They recently got that closure.

In December 2000 a missing person report was filed on Haggadon.

“She disappeared from a truck stop from an area hotel, kind of truck stop if you will,” said Monica Caison of the CUE Center for Missing Persons. “It was known to truckers to basically bed down. It was a cheaper hotel in Leland, NC. She left out one evening, her boyfriend reported her initially missing in Brunswick County and she’s never been seen or heard from since.”

According to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, about three weeks ago they received a notification on a match to DNA sent to a science center three years ago. The remains found in Darlington County, SC, back in 2000 were indeed that of Haggadon.

“The emotion of it’s pretty tough, because it’s like, you know, take the 11 years out, it’s like she passed away yesterday, because you literally get that answer,” Haggadon’s sister Tuesday Miller said.

Caison has been working on this case for over ten years. She has been working closely with the Haggadon family for most of that time.

“They wanted answers; they finally have them,” Caison said. “I think it’s going to be a little bit of healing for her children. Some time will have to pass there, but I think to know that their mother didn’t abandon them, and that she truly was a missing person. I think that’s going to mean a lot in their adult life.”

The DNA match comes after John Wayne Boyer admitted to killing Haggadon.

Boyer is a trucker, who was sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to second degree murder in the 2003 death of Scarlett Wood.

According to Caison, following multiple confessions investigators have labeled him a serial killer and are working to see if he is linked to other missing persons cases.

The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office says Darlington County is processing warrants on Boyer for killing Haggadon.
