FIRST ON 3: Trot Nixon to be enshrined in Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Trot Nixon is among the inductees who will enter the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame this spring. He joins local legends like Sonny Jurgenson, Roman Gabriel, Meadowlark Lemon and Althea Gibson in the Hall of Fame.
Nixon was a two-sport star in football and baseball at New Hanover High School. He passed up a scholarship to NC State to sign with the Boston Red Sox after being selected in the first round of 1993 MLB Draft.
The full 2012 class for the Hall of Fame will be announced at a news conference next week. The induction ceremony is scheduled for May 6 at UNCW’s Burney Center.
Nixon went on to play 12 years in the big leagues, including as a member of the 2004 World Champion Red Sox. He also played for the Indians, Diamondbacks and Mets before retiring in 2008.
Since his playing days Nixon returned home to Wilmington. He now serves as co-host of “The 5th Quarter” high school football highlights show each Friday night in the fall on WWAY NewsChannel 3.
