FIRST ON 3: Sen. Rabon explains bill to get rid of Brunswick Co. coroner

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Sen. Bill Rabon (R-Brunswick County) today explained to WWAY why he’s filed a bill to do away with Brunswick County’s coroner.

Senate Bill 215 filed yesterday would abolish the office of coroner when the current term of Greg White expires next year.

“The office of county coroner is a relic from past centuries,” Rabon told WWAY this afternoon. “Trained professionals in law enforcement and the medical field can serve our citizens more efficiently.”

White, who has held the office since 1985, says he disagrees.

“I think we are very efficient; have been for the 30 years we’ve served,” White said in a phone interview today. “It just disappoints me, because this is a county held position, that no county official had any input in this.”

Brunswick is one of only a few counties left across the state with an elected coroner.
