Flytrap theft suspects held under $1M bond

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Two Bolivia men are in jail under $1 million bond each accused of stealing rare plants from Orton Plantation.

Brunswick County deputies charged Scottie Gerome Stevenson, 44, and David Joel Lewis, 23, Saturday with one count of felony taking of a Venus Flytrap, 149 counts of taking of certain wild plants from land and one count of second degree trespass.

According to arrest warrants, investigators say Stevenson and Lewis stole more than 1,000 Venus Flytraps and two pitcher plants from Orton Plantation yesterday. A Brunswick County Sheriff’s spokeswoman says their arrests came after a search by a BCSO K9 of the backpacks the men were carrying revealed the plants.

NC Department of Public Safety records show Stevenson was convicted in 2012 in Brunswick County for taking of certain wild plants from land and sentenced to probation. His criminal record also includes convictions for drugs and receiving stolen goods.
