Forest Hills Elementary celebrates Arbor Day

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It’s arbor day in North Carolina and the kids of Forest Hills Elementary celebrated in a special way.

Thanks to Willard Farms and Akers Tree Movers, the school welcomed a new tree to their yard. The kids sung songs and read books about trees at their celebration, and even got a visit from the Mayor Bill Saffo.

Bill Akers said he donates his time because it’s all about teaching the kids.

“These little ones here today are going to grow up one day, and they’re going to need to know that, ‘hey, we can save some trees, we don’t have to cut them down, we can move them,’ ” Akers said.

The Wilmington Tree Commission organized the event and chairperson Connie Parker said they do it to educate the children.

‘It’s just a wonderful experience to see them get so excited and pumped up about a great big tree getting planted that’s going to be there for their grandchildren,” Parker said.

Arbor Day is typically celebrated in late April, but has to be celebrated early in North Carolina because it’s too hot by then to plant trees.
