Former cop under investigation for allegedly contacting juror

WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — A former police officer is under investigation after allegedly contacting a juror during a trial.

District Attorney Jon David says the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office is investigating former Tabor City police officer Anthony Spivey to determine if he violated any court rule or criminal law.

David confirmed the issue came up during the trial of Elias Antwan Collins, who a jury convicted of murder and other charges in the 2011 shooting death of a store clerk.

During the trial, Spivey allegedly contacted a juror. David says Judge Douglas Sasser instructed the jury to disregard Spivey’s testimony and remove the juror from the case. David says Judge Sasser “emphasized that the juror had done nothing wrong, but she was taken off the case to avoid even the appearance of impropriety.”
