Former Councilman Sparks calls out city for finding money for projects but not Love Grove

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Former Wilmington City Councilman Ron Sparks is calling out the City of Wilmington for not helping fund a second access to the Love Grove Community.

The city has turned down a request for funding the new access, saying it doesn’t have the money. But Sparks says the city has had absolutely no problem this past week finding $4 million to buy new downtown property, giving themselves raises, and lighting the Kenan Fountain for $50,000.

Earlier this summer, a CSX train derailed while passing through Love Grove, cutting off it’s only road in and out.

Sparks says the community has been fighting for a second access for years and he has decided to be the point person for the project.

He plans on addressing the council tonight at it’s bi-weekly meeting which starts at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.
