Former Laney teacher reconnects with Michael Jordan through Lower Cape Fear LifeCare
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A former Laney High School teacher recently shared an emotional reunion with one of her former students, basketball legend Michael Jordan, thanks to the efforts of Lower Cape Fear LifeCare.
According to LifeCare staff, patient Ms. Etta often reflected on favorite memories and former students during conversations with caregivers. Staff said Jordan’s name frequently came up, along with one special wish: “to hug Michael’s neck one more time.”
After several unsuccessful attempts to contact Jordan, Wendy, a LifeCare social worker, received a phone call from an unknown number asking, “Is this Ms. Etta?”
The caller was Jordan.
LifeCare said Wendy immediately drove to Ms. Etta’s home so the two could connect through FaceTime. During the call, the former teacher and student laughed, reminisced and shared memories together.
LifeCare said the reunion created a lasting memory for Ms. Etta and her family.
“This is what hospice is about,” LifeCare said in a statement. “It is about living as comfortably and fully as possible. It is about creating moments of connection, peace, laughter, and love. Sometimes those moments are quiet. Sometimes they are unforgettable. And sometimes… they even involve the GOAT.”
The organization thanked Wendy and Jordan for helping make the special wish possible.
