Former UNCW music professor, Wilmington Symphony timpanist John Rack remembered after death

Wilmington, NC (WWAY) — The University of North Carolina Wilmington’s Department of Music is remembering former Associate Professor of Music Dr. John Rack, who recently died after what the university described as a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease.

Rack retired from UNCW in 2021 after serving as an associate professor, where he coordinated the university’s music education program and taught percussion, world music and percussion methods.

In addition to his work at UNCW, Rack served for many years as principal timpanist with the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra.

According to the university, Rack’s involvement in music extended beyond the classroom and performance stage. He taught at summer music camps, directed community bands and traveled to Ghana, where he studied African musical traditions.

In a statement, the UNCW Department of Music described Rack as a kind, dedicated educator whose contributions extended beyond teaching. Faculty and alumni also remembered him for mentoring students and supporting the department in ways that went beyond his formal responsibilities.

A celebration of Rack’s life is scheduled for Thursday, July 16, at 3 p.m. at the Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary, located at 412 Ann St. in Wilmington.
