RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — A Forsyth County man has been arrested on federal charges alleging he threatened to kill federal officials involved in U.S. immigration enforcement and policy, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina.

Federal authorities said Richard David Warren, 61, formerly of Brunswick County, allegedly mailed threatening letters in June 2025 to two government officials responsible for leading immigration enforcement efforts and related policies.

According to court documents, Warren allegedly threatened to kill both officials, as well as the family of one official. Authorities also allege he threatened to blow up and burn down the home of another official.

Warren is charged with three counts of threatening to murder a federal official or a federal official’s family in violation of federal law, as well as two counts of mailing threatening communications to a federal official. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison on each charge.

“The safety and security of our personnel and their families is paramount. Threats of violence against federal officials—no matter the source or method—will be investigated with the utmost seriousness and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” said the special agent in charge of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office of Professional Responsibility.

“This case should serve as a clear warning: those who allegedly seek to intimidate or harm government officials in the performance of their duties will face consequences,” the statement continued.

Glenn McNeill also praised the officers involved in the arrest.

“The successful execution of this arrest warrant reflects the professionalism, courage, and unwavering commitment of our Deputy United States Marshals,” McNeill said. “Threats against public officials strike at the foundation of public service and the rule of law.”

Ellis Boyle announced the charges. The investigation is being conducted by ICE’s Office of Professional Responsibility within the United States Department of Homeland Security.

Federal charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
