Free weddings! Couples say ‘I do’ at New Hanover Register of Deeds

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Love is in the air! Some couples spent this Valentine’s Day getting hitched at the New Hanover County Register of Deeds.

The best part? It was free!

Eight couples decided it was time to tie the knot and they got some help from the county.

The New Hanover Register of Deeds held the local tradition of free weddings.

Not only did they say “I do” but with the average wedding costing more than $30,000 they also saved thousands.

Wedding officiant Bill Sirginson says this is a good way for couples to take advantage of what the county had to offer.

“They would’ve taken the same time if they had gone through a magistrate, or if they have a church,” Sirginson said. “If they would have gone to a church. It’s usually an hour and a half to two hours, if they get ready, and have everything done for them. This is a very inexpensive way for them to really enjoy what the community is giving back to them.”

Besides a free ceremony, local vendors also donated wedding cakes and free wedding photography. They also received gift bags.
