Free wildlife walks coming to Wilmington’s Burnt Mill Creek every Friday in October

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — People will have several opportunities to explore the wildlife living along one of Wilmington’s urban waterways during a series of free walks in October.

Cape Fear River Watch will offer free wildlife walks along Burnt Mill Creek from 8 to 9 a.m. every Friday in October.

According to the organization, more than 190 bird species have been documented around the tidal creek, which runs through Wilmington. The area is also home to schooling fish and reptiles, including alligators.

The walks will give participants an opportunity to look for wildlife while learning about Cape Fear River Watch’s work to improve water quality in the Burnt Mill Creek watershed.

The first walk is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 2, in partnership with the Cape Fear Bird Observatory. The remaining walks will be led by Cape Fear River Watch’s UNCW Health Equity Bonner Fellow LJ.

The final walk on Oct. 30 will have a Halloween twist. The “Burnt Mill Creek Eeekotour” will feature a Halloween theme, and participants are welcome to wear costumes.

Registration is open for all five walks. Registration is required for participants who want to secure a set of binoculars.
