Generator Safety Tips To Know As Hurricane Season Begins

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) — Hurricane season began Monday, and now just five days in, the first week is already coming to a close — but it runs all the way through Nov. 30.

That’s why it’s a good time to check one of the most important tools you may need in an emergency — your generator.

Portable generators can provide power during extended outages caused by storms, but experts say many haven’t been used in months and should be checked to make sure they are working properly.

They also warn generators can produce deadly carbon monoxide. Guillermo Rodriguez, spokesperson for the Portable Generator Manufacturers Association, says units should never be operated inside homes, garages, sheds or covered porches, where fumes can quickly build up and become dangerous.

“Carbon monoxide is a very dangerous gas. It is impossible for the human senses to detect it, and if a generator is used incorrectly it can lead to poisoning,” said Rodriguez.

Here are some generator safety tips to keep in mind:

Always operate generators outdoors, well away from doors and windows, and direct exhaust away from homes and people.

Make sure carbon monoxide detectors are installed and working inside the home.

Read the instruction manual before use, and don’t wait until a storm is approaching to get prepared.

And if you see a generator being used unsafely in your neighborhood, speak up — it could save a life.
