Grant will help local students learn about American history

The US Department of Education has given UNCW almost a million dollars in grant money to ramp up history lessons for kids in local school districts.

The Teaching American History Grant will help Brunswick, New Hanover, and Pender County school teachers improve student’s knowledge of American history. The three-year grant will provide training for 25 teachers each year.

UNCW professors and local museums will conduct the training; focusing on local history and how it connects to the history of the nation. “We are rich in history and tradition. Pender County alone has 11 sites that are listed on the National Historic Registrar of Historical sites,” said Bobby Hudspeth, Pender County Director of Secondary Education.

Teachers from kindergarten through twelfth grade will participate in seminars, visits to historic sites and develop lesson plans.
