Hagan bids Senate farewell

WASHINGTON, DC (WWAY) — Sen. Kay Hagan (D-NC) was emotional at times as she made a farewell speech this afternoon on the floor the US Senate.

Hagan is leaving the Senate at the end of her single term after losing to Republican Thom Tillis last month.

Hagan choked up as she talked about professional accomplishments as well as her family and the milestones they’ve experienced during her six years in office, including the marriage of her two daughters and birth of her two grandchildren.

“North Carolinians gave me the opportunity to be a voice in Washington,” the former state senator from Greensboro said, as she fought back tears, “and I put North Carolinians first every single day, and I urge my colleagues to do the same; to remember who you’re fighting for, not who you are fighting against.”

Among the accomplishments Hagan looked back on during her 13-minutes speech was helping Marine Corps veteran Jerry Ensminger of Bladen County get answers about toxic tap water at Camp Lejeune he says led to his daughter’s death.
