Hammer Head shark washes ashore in Carolina Beach

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — A rare sight washed ashore on Carolina Beach Sunday afternoon as a large hammerhead shark was found dead near the coastline.

Images shared by Tess Lampert show the shark on the beach just south of the Carolina Beach Pier. Lampert said the shark was discovered Sunday afternoon.

Members of the North Carolina Shark Conservancy responded to the scene to examine the shark and take measurements. The organization estimated the hammerhead was about 13 feet, 10 inches long.

Researchers also conducted genetic testing and extracted teeth from the shark as part of efforts to learn more about the animal.
