Hammerheads offer soccer complex outside city limits to Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Hammerheads have owned the soccer complex off of U.S. 421 several years and now the organization wants to make a change which could help expand and bring more youth sport to the complex.

The Wilmington Hammerheads brought a proposal forward at Wilmington City Council’s agenda briefing Monday. It was to allow Wilmington to take ownership of the Hammerheads soccer fields. However, the club wants to continue managing the complex.

Some members of city council believed the organization would be the right choice to run the facility, if an agreement is reached.

“From the comments that I heard today from a lot of the different council members, there’s things that they would like to insert into that contract to make certain that the public has access to the facility. That any kind of a conflict in regards to scheduling is very well defined because a lot of different groups will be using this facility, not only soccer but also lacrosse also football,” Mayor Bill Saffo said.

Mayor Saffo also said once discussions are finished and if all requirements are met, the council will make a decision.
