Harris Teeter reportedly considers sale

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wall Street Journal reports the possibility of a North Carolina- based grocery chain going up for sale. Harris Teeter employs thousands of people in our area and around the state…and has a loyal following among its shoppers.

“Well I think it would be terrible. We use them. I enjoy the food that you eat as well as what you buy. Good selection, fresh, really good. I enjoy Harris Teeter,” Donnie Pierce said.

But the future of the North Carolina- based grocery chain could be up in the air. The Wall Street Journal first reported Harris Teeter is considering a sale. The store’s corporate office did not return our call for comment, but a spokeswoman told the Charlotte Observer, ” As a matter of policy, Harris Teeter does not comment on speculation.”

More than two- hundred stores are in North Carolina, including ten locations in New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender counties. It’s unclear how a potential sale would impact the stores and their customers, or whether the Harris Teeter name would continue.

“Well I would probably come and see what’s available and what it’s like, but I like Harris Teeter,” Pierce said.
