Heavy traffic reported on US 17 near Alligator Creek in Leland

LELAND, NC — Heavy traffic caused major delays Friday morning on U.S. 17 heading from Wilmington into Leland near where U.S. 17 transitions into U.S. 74 near Alligator Creek.
A WWAY reporter at the scene said traffic slowed to a standstill at times.
According to DriveNC, the two left lanes are closed near NC 133, leaving two of three lanes closed in the area. The expected traffic impact has been classified as high. Maps from DriveNC showed heavy congestion in the area.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol told WWAY the incident was being handled by the Leland Police Department.
WWAY has also reached out to the Town of Leland for additional information but has not yet received a response.
Officials have not released details about what caused the traffic backup, although our crew at the scene reported seeing cars involved in a crash.
Drivers traveling from Wilmington to Brunswick County were urged to expect delays in the area.
