Highway Patrol: Alcohol suspected in fatal weekend motorcycle crash

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — North Carolina Highway Patrol suspects alcohol was a factor in a fatal motorcycle crash this weekend.

According to a news release, Douglas Raymond Barker, 44, of Leland, was riding his 2000 Harley-Davidson south on Old Town Creek Road near Leland around 9:30 p.m. Saturday. Investigators say Barker failed to stop at the intersection of Old Town Creek Road and Town Creek Road. They say the motorcycle ran off the road, overturned and threw Barker.  The motorcycle then hit a tree and wound up in a yard.

Highway Patrol says Barker, who was wearing a helmet, died from his injuries yesterday at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

No one else was involved in the crash.

According to the release, investigators suspect alcohol impairment in the crash, but no alcohol results are available at this time.
