Hoggard men’s soccer opens conference play with 4-2 win over New Hanover

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) — Hoggard men’s soccer opened conference play Thursday night with a 4-2 win over New Hanover at Legion Stadium. The matchup featured two of the state’s top-ranked teams, with the defending state champion Vikings striking first.

Harry Dyer scored from close range to give Hoggard a 1-0 lead. New Hanover responded just three minutes later when Tre Bennett made a run toward goal and finished to tie the match at 1-1.

Hoggard regained the lead before halftime when Nash Berry found the back of the net, sending the Vikings into the break up 2-1. The Vikings extended their lead in the second half when James McLean scored to make it 3-1.

Bennett answered with his second goal of the night, pulling New Hanover within one at 3-2. McLean then added his second goal of the match to give Hoggard a 4-2 advantage, which held through the final whistle.

The win moves Hoggard to 7-0-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The Vikings return to conference action Tuesday against Topsail.
