Holiday Miracles: Robin and Bailey

For the past few weeks we’ve been asking you to send us a letter if you had some special needs this holiday season.

Together with our community business partners, we’re trying to make some special things happen for some local families.

Viewers wrote us some amazing letters about their lives and asking for help this holiday season.

It was extremely difficult for our staff and partners to choose five special recipients but somehow they did.

We begin by meeting Robin and her daughter. Robin is one of several struggling single mothers we’ve met this Christmas season.

She and her 15-year-old daughter Bailey get by, but it’s not easy. Her letter told a story of tough choices:

“I am currently two months behind on my mortgage and I can only half of my light bill at a time. Christmas looks meek for us. I don’t smoke or drink or do drugs so if you would consider us for a miracle I would just like some groceries and something for bailey for Christmas.”

We were happy to oblige, with gift cards to Food Lion and Claires, all in a nice gift basket mother and daughter could share and a $200 gift certificate to the mall.

Robin makes $9 an hour working as a receptionist — too much to qualify for many government programs but too little to afford health insurance and pay the day-to-day bills.

Robin said, “I have hypo-thyroid and I get my medicine from Wal-Mart. But I have to take it every other day when I can buy it.”

We included a gift card to Wal-Mart with hopes she can take that medicine every day.

“Thank you so much, and I hope you all have a merry Christmas,” Robin said.
