Hugh MacRae Park spruced up with azaleas ahead of Azalea Festival

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Cape Fear Garden Club was busy Tuesday morning planting azaleas at Hugh MacRae Park in preparation for next week’s Azalea Festival.

New Hanover County leaders and azalea belles joined the garden club at the gazebo to commemorate this annual event. Some of the belles say this time of year is a reminder of the importance of community.

“We’re all just one big family and it’s just an amazing time for us to be together to talk to get to know each other. Even if we do know each other, just to us to reconnect again and just work together to make this place beautiful,” Azalea Belle Ivey Winberry said.

The money needed to buy the azaleas comes from a sale of greeting cards in honor, or in memory of, a family member or friend.

The Cape Fear Garden Club says they planted nearly 1,000 azaleas thanks to the sale.
