Humpback whale dies after washing ashore in Bald Head Island

BALD HEAD ISLAND, NC (WWAY) – A baby humpback whale died after washing ashore in Bald Head Island.

According to the BHI Conservancy Facebook page, the whale washed up on south beach by the shoals and died just after 6:00 p.m. The UNCW mammal stranding team is performing a necropsy before the whale is buried.

BHI Conservancy estimates the whale was 8 months old and measures between 20-25 feet.
