Hundreds of dogs to compete for Best in Show in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — More than 500 dogs are expected to compete in Wilmington when the Hanover Kennel Club holds its annual American Kennel Club-licensed all-breed dog shows in October.

The club’s 130th and 131st annual shows are scheduled for Oct. 10 and 11 at Legion Stadium on Carolina Beach Road. Dogs representing a variety of breeds will compete throughout the weekend, with Best in Show competitions planned for both Saturday and Sunday.

The Mid-Atlantic Hound Association will also hold events at the site from Oct. 9 through Oct. 11.

Organizers say spectators will have opportunities to meet different breeds and speak with breeders about topics including training, grooming and selecting a breed that fits their lifestyle.

Admission and parking are free. Food trucks and vendors are also expected to be on site.

Organizers say dogs that are not entered in the competition will not be allowed on the show grounds because of safety concerns. Spectators are asked to leave their pets at home.

The Hanover Kennel Club was founded in 1939 and says it has served Wilmington and surrounding counties through dog training and education, along with support for several local animal-related organizations and programs.
