Shooting victim: ‘I got hit, and my friend got hit’

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington police are investigating a drive-by shooting that left one teen dead and four others injured. Chilling 911 calls have been released from the scene.

In the call a witness said there were 20 shots fired Sunday around 11 am when a 16 year-old now identified as Shane Simpson was killed.

“We need someone immediately, I think they are shot,” said a female caller. “Automatic weapons, 20 shots.”

You can hear in the 911 calls from that morning a boy saying he was hit, as he called out the name Shane repeatedly.

“Yeah, there was shooting. I got hit, and my friend got hit,” said the boy. “Shane, Shane, Shane, bro.”

The caller goes on to say he didn’t think his friend Shane was breathing.

“I don’t think he’s breathing,” said the boy.

He also tells the operator Shane was shot more than once.

Investigators said they believe the shooting was gang-related. They have not made any arrests but they are looking for a person of interest.

This shooting was recently added to a 2015 mass shooting.
