ILM tests emergency plan through mass casualty exercise

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington International Airport tested out its emergency plan this weekend through a simulated mass casualty exercise.

Several New Hanover County and Wilmington agencies participated in the response. About 50 people volunteered to be victims of the simulated plane crash, which caught on fire and separated on the tarmac at ILM. The victims role played, each assigned different injuries.

“We’re grateful to the county and city agencies that cooperate with the airport and we like to think that if something happens it’s like nothing happens because these folks are ready for it,” said John Lennon with ILM Airport Authority.

The exercise is mandated by the FAA and required every three years.
