Islamic Center of Wilmington strengthens security after alleged threat
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Leaders at the Islamic Center of Wilmington are speaking out after an alleged threat earlier this month, saying the incident has prompted new security measures while reinforcing the center’s commitment to welcoming the community.
Surveillance video captured a man approaching the Islamic Center on July 12, allegedly threatening to tear the building down, making profane remarks and pulling on the mosque’s door.
In the days that followed, the incident sparked a wave of reaction on social media. While many community members expressed support for the center, Imam and Center Director Safwan Salman said some comments defending the alleged actions were alarming.
“I think it’s definitely concerning that there are comments out there like that. There were very shocking comments that were on there that supported this kind of act. The positive side is that our city, the residents of this city, the neighbors of us are very overwhelming, peaceful, and loving, and they reached out, and they showed their support,” said Salman.
Salman said the incident served as a wake-up call and has led the center to place a greater emphasis on security and preparedness.
“Yes, we have to up our game in security, in education, and letting people know if something happens like this, what do we do? We have been taking measures; we’re making sure that everyone is aware of threats like this,” said Salman.
Following the incident, Salman requested that the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office station a deputy at the Islamic Center around the clock.
The sheriff’s office denied that request, citing resource allocation, but instead offered increased patrols and a mobile surveillance trailer.
According to the sheriff’s office, a miscommunication delayed the deployment of the trailer. After WWAY contacted both the sheriff’s office and the Islamic Center, the two parties reconnected, and the installation process is now set to begin.
Despite the incident, Salman said the center’s mission remains unchanged.
“This person that carried out this kind of hate crime, or this kind of hate act, didn’t know us, and therefore he had a thought about us that he wanted to carry out in rage, and my communication with our congregation is carry your true personality out there, which is being peaceful, loving, and make sure you let people know who we are.”
Salman said the Islamic Center will continue holding its regular gatherings and prayer services while strengthening security measures. He also said the center will continue welcoming the community and encouraging people to learn about Islam firsthand rather than allowing hate or misinformation to define who they are.
