Island of Lights New Year’s Eve celebration to be held at pier; town apologizes Ocean Front Park not completed

KURE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The Island of Lights New Year’s Eve celebration will be held in Kure Beach this year, but not at a new park as the town had hoped.

The town of Kure Beach apologized on its website Saturday that construction of Ocean Front Park is not completed.

The town purchased land for the park in December, 2007 and construction began in July, 2011.

The park was supposed to be built in a year, but construction hit a snag when the town fired the original contractor for what it said was shoddy work.

The annual New Year’s celebration will begin at 9:00 p.m. near the Kure Beach Fishing Pier, with a beach ball drop and fireworks taking place at midnight.
