Ivanka Trump campaigns for her father in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY/AP) — President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign hosted a “fireside chat” with Ivanka Trump in Wilmington on Monday.

The event was moderated by Trump 2020 National Press Secretary Hogan Gidley.

“Washington has not changed Donald Trump,” Ivanka Trump, the President’s advisor, said. “Donald Trump has changed Washington, and it’s very true.”

President Trump has made numerous stops in North Carolina over the past couple of weeks. The visit from his daughter comes less than two weeks after her visited Wilmington, when he declared the city a “World War II Heritage City” on V-J Day.

This visit from Ivanka Trump was much more campaign driven, and one of several campaign stops for her with the election is less than two months away.

“Right here in North Carolina, in January, you were experiencing the lowest unemployment rate this state has had in decades,” she said.

Trump spoke to a small crowd in downtown Wilmington Monday, highlighting her father’s efforts over the last three and a half years, starting with his work during the coronavirus pandemic.

“He now has three different candidates in the third-phase clinical trials, which is unheard of,” she said. “So he’s done it in four months, which the previous fastest vaccine ever produced in America took 14 months.”

Many small businesses applied for the Paycheck Protection Program to stay afloat during the pandemic. During her trip, Trump stopped by Burrito Shak on Carolina Beach Road to discuss the challenges of being a small business owner during a pandemic.

Trump also acknowledged the recent civil unrest around the country.

“It was this president who delivered the most historic criminal justice reform that we’ve had in a generation,” she said.

The President’s daughter also touted his commitment to family policy and education, referencing several pieces of legislation passed by his administration.

“The president is the first president of either party to put paid family leave into his budget,” she said.

Trump also emphasized her father’s economic agenda moving forward, focusing on four pillars – revision of trade deals, tax reform, deregulation and energy independence. She is very confident in his bid of re-election.

“You have a person who really is a vessel for whatever the fringe of the party or the mainstream media want him to be,” Ivanka Trump said. “And on the other hand, you have somebody who, arguable, is the most authentic president we’ve ever had.”

Ahead of Ivanka’s visit, NCDP Communications Director Austin Cook released the following statement:

“As Donald Trump botched our federal response to the coronavirus, coastal cities like Wilmington have paid the price, losing millions of dollars in revenue while small businesses have shuttered and tourism has plummeted. Now that we’re six months into this crisis, North Carolinians can see that Trump doesn’t have a plan to get us out of it, and that’s why Ivanka’s visit today won’t provide any comfort to the working families who are struggling to get by right now. The Trump administration has left communities like Wilmington behind, and four more years of the same backwards economic policies won’t put our city back on its feet.”

This is Ivanka Trump’s fifth visit to North Carolina over the last three and a half years, and her second visit to the state in a week.

On Thursday, she toured a local farmers market in Raleigh and participated in a Farmers to Families Food Box distribution event.

Editor’s Note: A previous version of this story said Ivanka Trump surprised Burrito Shak with a PPP loan, which is information provided by the Trump campaign. That was incorrect.
